Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian Interview
I had the privilege of sitting in on an interview with Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Airlines, recently. He shared his Leadership Nuggets from decades of experience.
In 2005, Ed jumped into the middle of a mess at Delta created by previous CEO’s. His goals included:
1) Change the company Vision based on the market.
2) Don’t defend past company decisions.
3) Run after the difficult situations - don’t hide from them.
In Ed’s quest to fix the Delta Airlines culture he asked a fundamental question: Are employees burdens or a company’s greatest asset?
Leaders need to be honest in answering the question. Ed decided that, ‘YES! Employees are our greatest asset.’ Making that decision kindled the spirit of the entire Delta staff.
Leadership Nuggets
* Earn trust back by valuing people, apologizing when needed, and “owning” the current state-of-affairs.
* Leadership is not a popularity contest. Make course corrections as needed.
* Do not be drawn away from your company’s strengths. (Delta reinstated the Red Coat Concierge service they were previously known for.)
Ed’s final thought: “Things are getting better. But, change takes time.”
If you find yourself in the midst of a messy organization, decide what part you can play in shaping a positive future for yourself, your team, your company.
Until next time...Lead like you mean it!
