A Leader’s Character

D.L. Moody, a famous minister and author, was once asked, “What is character?” Moody replied, “Character is what a man is in the dark.”

Think about that for a minute in terms of the workplace. Do you behave the same when the boss is around than when you are alone? With your team members? Do you speak respectfully to someone only to slam them when they are gone? Are their office supplies in your briefcase? Did you make a long distance call to your cousin on the company dime? Did you fake a receipt on your last expense report? Did you tell your team a deadline was two weeks earlier than when it’s actually due?

The number of ways to cheat - yes, cheat - your company is endless...especially when no one is looking. When there is incongruency between your public and private face the potential for downfall is great. Take a look in the mirror—do you see the reflection of someone with character or someone living a lie? If it’s the latter, then it’s time to either step down as a leader or change and live a life of honesty.

Until next time...live like you mean it!
