Self Destructive Habits

I’m motivated this sunny Monday morning—life is great!  The planets must be aligned because projects are easily falling into place and the puppy is snoozing by the front picture window.

Then I got the call.

A client has just reviewed my recommendations around an issue in their organization.  He stated, “This won’t work here because we are different.  You don’t understand that our business doesn’t operate the same as everyone else.”

Hmmm - this reminded me a concept in Jagdish Sheth’s book, “The Self Destructive Habits of Good Companies.”

Sheth identifies DENIAL as one of those self-destructive habits, and it can also be applied to leaders.  Warning signs of denial in organizations looks like:

* “I am different” syndrome
* “Not invented here” syndrome - you are too proud to admit someone else found a better way
* “Looking for answers in all the wrong places” syndrome - blame others for your situation

Unfortunately, my client may be suffering from the ‘I AM DIFFERENT’ Syndrome and doesn’t know how to break this negative habit.  If you find yourself making excuses to your team about why business is down, then pay attention on how to break the habit of denial.

How to Break a Self Destructive Habit

1.  Be on the Lookout.
Consciously watch and analyze your response to failure.  Examine products, processes, resistance to change.

2.  Be Honest with Yourself.
Admit to your team that you blew it.  By taking this step, you can easily move them from a standstill into proactive problem-solving.

3.  Be Prepared to Change.
Do something different - NOW.  If old thought patterns brought you to a bad place, then stop the madness by not repeating those thoughts.

Create a new environment by surrounding yourself with team members who support your new direction, hold you accountable for your actions, and respectfully give you honest feedback.

You will be the leader your team expects.

Until next time...live like you mean it!
