Take Care of Yourself

It happens every winter season - the dreaded extra pounds due to inactivity which just leads to more stress.  This season is no exception.

According to the RealAge website (http://www.realage.com), “Researchers have found a strong link between chronic work stress and a nasty cluster of factors know as syndrome X (or metabolic syndrome).  They increase your blood pressure, your belt size, and your odds of developing diabetes.”

Is that any way to be the best leader for your team?

Planning a little activity and relaxation time into your week is one way to guard against daily work stress.  Here are my Top 5 ideas on what to do and when to fit it into your schedule.

Tip 1 - Do not eat at your desk and work through lunch. Instead, walk for 20 minutes after lunch.  Is the weather bad?  No gym nearby?  Walk the stairs in your building.

Tip 2 - Get a massage. This is especially helpful for back, neck and head pain from too much sitting at your desk.

Tip 3 - Schedule a weekly sports date. Participate in any sport (golf, tennis, basketball) that takes your mind off business challenges.  Totally immersing yourself in a weekly hobby lets you rest from the work week and gain some perspective.

Tip 4 - Daily 18 minutes of reading for pleasure. Why 18 minutes?  It’s a number that works for me—15 minutes seems too little; 20 minutes makes me feel guilty.  Find a good novel or something inspirational that is meaningful to you.  Read with intention to get your mind off pressing work issues.  Keep yourself on track by setting a timer.

Tip 5 - Take 15 minutes to incorporate music into your day. Whether it’s listening to your favorite CD, belting out a song, or playing an instrument, music allows you to use the other side of your brain.

Do your team a favor—serve them by taking care of yourself.

Until next time...live like you mean it!
