What is Credibility?

In an experiment this week, I decided to pay attention to the language I use and found I use the word “credibility” quite a bit. The problem is that I’m not sure if folks understand the full depth of that word as it relates to business. What does credibility as a leader entail?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ‘credibility’ as: “the quality or power of inspiring belief”.

There are several characteristics we admire in our leaders. These traits contribute to a person’s ability to lead:

INTEGRITY
Also known as honesty, the term encompasses moral judgment. IE - ‘playing fair,’ no sign of corruption

COMPETENCE
A leader has to appear to be able to do the job. Do they have a track record of doing the job successfully? This is a combination of technical and people skills.

INSPIRATION
The ability to make people feel good about themselves, and inspires action during the tough times.

VISION
The ability to articulate a clear purpose and direction about where the organization is headed.

CHARISMA
The intangible something ‘extra’ that goes beyond looks, manner, or personality. A magnetic charm or appeal that has people wanting to listen to you.

Which of these attributes do you have as a leader that gives you more credibility? Take a quick look at your abilities in each of these areas, and be mindful of any credibility gap. Be very aware of the discrepancy between your professed ideals and your actual practices.

Until next time...live like you mean it!
